As I shot this piece I had quite an inspiring feeling building inside me at this location. Watching from my perch above as the sun reached for the stars, and the sea reached for the golden sands, it felt like I was taken back in time. Like this is what it must have been like in the beginning, before man. Quiet. Perfect. Nature. I watched as The Creator painted the landscape in long brushes of light. It was beyond magical, like I was the one writing the Book of Genesis.
“Il Furore” | Edition Size: 100 | Sizes: 20″x30″ • 30″x45″ • 40″x60″ | Starting at: $395
Very few places I’ve ever visited gave me the feeling as I had when I visited this volcano in Italy for the first time. I was a young photographer, just out of college and trying to make my way. Fifteen years later I went back to bring my wife to this unbelievable location. Thankfully, very little had changed. The raw power of the volcano was as mesmerizing as it was the first time I was there, and my wife was blown away.
I shot this volcano from the time the sun was still high in the sky until way after dark. It doesn’t erupt constantly and some times it doesn’t at all. But it was a risk I was willing to take. Thankfully, the great mountain let loose for us a handful of times as the sun was dropping. This may be the best shot and it was captured just before night fully enveloped the sky.
Guess what? I even have a short video clip for this one. Want to see it? Of course you do, check it out below!
Of Peace and Prayer
“Of Peace and Prayer” | Edition Size: 25 | Sizes: 20″x30″ • 30″x45″ • 40″x60″ | Starting at: $395
Years ago when I lived in Chicago, I would go and visit this Bahai temple and marvel at the architecture and the beauty of the gardens surrounding the building. I knew I wanted to photograph it one day in the right light, so when I was there over the summer a few years back I watched how the light hit the building. I noticed at a certain time of day the sun hit directly on the face of this side of the building, casting shadows straight back. A few days later I came down on a clear day in the morning and watched as the light got better and better. I switched to manual focus and exposure and shot the piece while using neutral density filters to darken the sky. The contrasts of this piece lend it to an excellent black and white composition and have helped earn it multiple awards from both the International Photography Awards and the Monochrome Awards. I’m happy now to release it in a extremely limited edition of only 25 pieces.
