I spent a good portion of my last trip to Iceland in search of an epic reflection shot. The problem was that in Iceland, like Maui, the wind is blowing all the time. And it’s not just a little gentle breeze. For the first week I was there I could barely set up my tripod without it getting blown over. Winds were sustained at over 50 mph. It was insane! There were times our 4×4 vehicle was being pushed off the road, not to mention that if we parked the vehicle facing into the wind, we literally couldn’t open the doors. And if we parked the vehicle facing away from the wind, the doors might literally break off their hinges (seriously, our rental car agent told us that)! I thought that my trip was going to be a disaster, but by the second week the winds subsided a bit. Finally on my last day in Iceland I woke to a stillness I hadn’t seen before. Fortunately, I was in the perfect spot to shoot this perfect landscape.
The power of prayer really works, my friends. I had pre-planned this location and new it would be perfect for a reflection shot if the winds would die down. I prayed hard about it the last night I was there and bam, I woke up in the morning to a perfectly still day! Mahalo ke Akua!
