Artist notes:
I’m humbled to have received top honors for this piece at the International Photographic Competition. Not only did the piece make the coveted “Loan Collection,” but it also represents the first time I’ve really branched out from landscapes and into architectural photography.
This massive church in the middle of Reykjavik, Iceland dwarfs the rest of the city and the surrounding neighborhoods. As I came up to the church, I knew I wanted to capture it somehow, though harnessing its true essence appeared difficult because of the incredible amounts of detail and grandeur of the structure. As stunning as the church itself was, the ground in front of it appeared like a labyrinth of light and dark tiles and was equally mesmerizing. Walking around the sculpture, it was obvious the most impressive view was from the front. I decided to setup my tripod just inches off the ground in order to capture the lines on the ground and the towering pinnacle of the church.
The skies were themselves exciting and dramatic and added to the ominous feel of the piece. I’m very happy with how it came out and equally as ecstatic about how well it was received!
