Artist notes:
The scene before you was something of a miracle to capture. Many times when out shooting I tend to see something that strikes me as interesting. Once that happens, the danger involved with capturing the scene eludes my consciousness. And this was the case here. This image was taken maybe a half an hour or so before sunrise. The landscape of lava rocks that you see in the foreground extended back behind this scene too, and I found myself jumping from one rock to another in nearly pitch darkness with my gear to find the perfect location for this shot.
If you’ve ever been on or near lava rock, then you know it is as sharp as razor blades, and this was no exception. It’s a good thing I had shoes on this morning (usually I don’t!). Between the rocks below and the rushing ocean water all around me, looking back, I’m thrilled to have been able to capture this image!
